Joel Embiid to Miss Multiple Games Due to Left Knee Swelling: 76ers Provide Update
Philadelphia 76ers’ center and 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid is sidelined due to left knee swelling and will miss his second consecutive game on Sunday. The team announced that Embiid is undergoing treatment, and further updates regarding his condition will be shared early next week.
Embiid was first ruled out during the Friday NBA Cup game against the Brooklyn Nets, where the Sixers clinched a 113-98 victory. The decision was made collaboratively by the team’s medical staff to allow Embiid to manage his knee’s condition. Initially listed as “questionable,” his status was downgraded to “out” just 30 minutes before the tip-off.
Head coach Nick Nurse addressed the situation, stating, “We knew managing Joel’s knee swelling would be a part of the season. Despite efforts, the swelling didn’t improve enough for him to play tonight or Sunday.”
Embiid last appeared on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, scoring a season-high 35 points and grabbing 11 rebounds despite visibly struggling with knee discomfort. His efforts kept the team competitive in their narrow 117-111 loss.
The injury has limited Embiid’s appearances this season, with the star missing 11 of the 15 games played so far. His absence comes alongside other key players dealing with injuries, such as Paul George and Tyrese Maxey.
The 30-year-old center, who underwent knee surgery last season after a meniscus tear, signed a $193 million contract extension earlier this year. His health remains critical for the Sixers as they aim for a deep postseason run.
